Checking for updates on your device

Symptoms

Your device is not currently operating to its normal capacity and applications continue to crash.

Resolution

Walkthrough:

1. Start at the desktop screen of your device.
2. Click on the windows start (#) in the bottom left of your screen.
3. Under the applications search for settings.
4. Once settings open, on the left tab of the window search to click on 'Windows Update'
5. It may say you are up to date, yet it may have not been checked recently. Click on 'Check for Updates'.
6. Let the scan complete. Allow any updates to apply to your device. You may need to reset your device for some installs.
7. Some updates may require you to restart your device.

Notes:

There are scheduled updates sent to your device every week. For some updates, they may have already been downloaded and are pending in the background of your device. These updates could be a BIOS/Firmware update. This would not show any needed updates from the above steps taken.

To verify if this is the case, please hard reset your device to verify there are no pending installs.

Cause

With updates scheduled for your device, if there is no downtime for your device some updates can not be applied. Downtime is defined as a full shutdown or powered off. Just closing the lid on your device puts it into a pause state and creates a checkpoint. Even with the device running out of power in hibernation, this does not clear the checkpoint from when the lid was closed.
